Patient Testimony:
“I am a C2-3 quadriplegic with no diaphragmatic enervation. After 37 years of breathing artificially, my accessory muscles only last about five minutes before pain and fatigue set in. I have no trach, so I depend on a vent and nasal mask, a phrenic nerve stimulator, or a pneumobelt 24 hours a day. The phrenic pacer has become unreliable and only works a few hours a day. However, I am upright about 13 hours a day, programming computer games and organizing or participating in political campaigns for the Sierra Club and four other groups.
I’ve used the exsufflation belt for 12 years and it increases my quality of life immeasurably. It’s simple, noninvasive, safe, maintenance-free, discrete, reliable, and requires no training. It lets me attend meetings and rallies, visit friends, run errands, go to concerts, and lead a somewhat normal life. Without it I can’t really be in public and am stuck in the house every day. Anything you could do to produce more would make an enormous difference in my life and the lives of many others, I’m sure.”
